Born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, Juul-Hansen fell upon an architecture at twenty. Studying business and with no interest in the field, he decided to try something different and that’s when architecture came in the picture. In Florida, he studied and received his Bachelor of Architecture from Univerisity of Miami and, later, a Master of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

With some of the priciest apartments in New York City on his portfolio, Thomas Juul-Hansen is recognized as one of the designers with the most potential playing the game at the moment. With projects ranging from residential to hospitality, the firm has explored in its time the most unique and innovative solutions to have a final set that is not only beautiful but functional.

“Squeezing an apartment into a tiny space doesn’t work. There’s a functionality to luxury. (…) You need to have a living room big enough to have a space to sit, and have room for a dining table, to have closets, a real kitchen. Luxury for me is much more about space and natural light.”

– Thomas Juul-Hansen

One of the keystones of the company is this notion of functionality working towards bettering the space and the design itself, with the belief that the quality of the design is informed by the culture, circumstance and function. This approach combined with a great understanding of light and space has given Thomas the recognition for coherent design solutions.

“We spend a lot of time making sure the design is practical and we don’t waste space. We try to be very efficient.”

– Thomas Juul-Hansen

One of the most recent projects signed by Juul-Hansen was the transformation of an art school into a luxe Tribeca building. And that, has Manhattan talking!

Project Details:

Name: 11 Beach Street

Design Team: Thomas Juul-Hansen, LLC; BKSK Architects; Interior Marketing Group

Size: 113,197 Square Feet

Location: Tribeca, New York

In the heart of New York’s Tribeca area, Thomas transformed an old building where a former art school had been into a 27-unit luxury residential building. With different sizes, each apartment features modern interiors, with large kitchens and – the most important – a functional approach to design.

Thomas Juul-Hansen has collaborated with New York City developers and fellow designers throughout his career and had some very famous clients, including chef Jean Georges Vongerichten, jeweller David Yurman and film executive Paula Wagner.
